Engineering Licensure

Did you know engineering firms are required to have engineers licensed in the states and countries they work in? There are several reasons this is required.

Safety and Welfare: Licensed engineers are bound by a code of ethics in order to provide public safety and meet stringent safety standards.

Professional Competence: The licensing process requires engineers to demonstrate knowledge and skills through education, testing and experience. This guarantees a level of competence.

Accountability: Licensed engineers are held accountable for the work they perform. Failure to meet the professional standards that have been set can result in disciplinary action and loss of license.

Trust: Clients can be confident the engineers on their job have the capabilities and integrity to perform at the highest level.

The general licensing process includes:

  • Education (a bachelor’s degree at a minimum)
  • Fundamentals of Engineering Exam
  • Professional Experience equaling a certain amount of time, ranging from two to four years.
  • Principles and Practice Exam (PE Exam). This test evaluates the ability to apply engineering principles in real world scenarios.
  • Licensing Application. This application may include verification of experience, references and an ethics exam.
  • Continuing Education. Licensed engineers are required to participate in continuing education in order to maintain their licenses.
